چکیده

A quantum system can undergo a continuous phase transition at the absolute zero of temperature as some parameter entering its Hamiltonian is varied. These transitions are particularly interesting for, in contrast to their classical finite temperature counterparts, their dynamic and static critical behaviors are intimately intertwined. We show that considerable insight is gained by considering the path integral description of the quantum statistical mechanics of such systems, which takes the form of the classical statistical mechanics of a system in which time appears as an extra dimension. In particular, this allows the deduction of scaling forms for the finite temperature behavior, which turns out to be described by the theory of finite size scaling. It also leads naturally to the notion of a temperature-dependent dephasing length that governs the crossover between quantum and classical fluctuations. We illustrate these ideas using Josephson junction arrays and with a set of recent experiments on phase transitions in systems exhibiting the quantum Hall effect.

Quantum phases and fluctuations in correlated electron systems with frustration and competing interactions are reviewed. In the localized moment case the S=1/2 J1 - J2 - model on a square lattice exhibits a rich phase diagram with magnetic as well as exotic hidden order phases due to the interplay of frustration and quantum fluctuations. Their signature in magnetocaloric quantities and the hig...

Continuous topological phase transitions between clean quantum hall states

Continuous transitions between states and the same symmetry but different topological orders are studied. Clean quantum Hall (QH) liquids with neutral nonbosonic quasiparticles are shown to have such transitions under the right conditions. For clean bilayer (mmn) states, a continuous transition to other QH states (including non-Abelian states) can be driven by increasing interlayer repulsion/tu...

Nucleation in finite topological systems during continuous metastable quantum phase transitions.

Finite topological quantum systems can undergo continuous metastable quantum phase transitions to change their topological nature. Here we show how to nucleate the transition between ring currents and dark soliton states in a toroidally trapped Bose-Einstein condensate. An adiabatic passage to wind and unwind its phase is achieved by explicit global breaking of the rotational symmetry. This cou...

Dynamical Quantum Phase Transitions in Systems with Continuous Symmetry Breaking

Interacting many-body systems that are driven far away from equilibrium can exhibit phase transitions between dynamically emerging quantum phases, which manifest as singularities in the Loschmidt echo. Whether and under which conditions such dynamical transitions occur in higher-dimensional systems with spontaneously broken continuous symmetries is largely elusive thus far. Here, we study the d...
